Intimate Lightening
We typically associate hyperpigmentation with areas that are frequently exposed to the sun, but those are not the only areas that may darken as we age.
Pigmentation in intimate areas can occur for a variety of reasons. It may result from a genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, the ageing process or external factors such as our choices in clothing or hair removal. This can affect individuals of any skin type or ethnicity.
Dermamelan Intimate offers a targeted solution. At Kaya Cosmedica, we know the appearance of our intimate areas can be a personal and sensitive subject, and we apply these treatments with the utmost professionalism, discretion and respect.

What Is Dermamelan Intimate?
Dermamelan Intimate by Mesoestetic is a medical depigmenting treatment for reducing hyperpigmentation in external intimate areas, such as the axilla, vulva, inner thighs and groin. Like our Dermamelan treatment for facial depigmentation, Dermamelan Intimate has dual corrective and regulatory actions that improve pigmentary concerns in both the short and long term.
The formula contains a precise combination of ingredients that target and diminish accumulations of excess melanin. Active ingredients include various acids (azelaic, ferulic, phytic, kojic, lactic, salicylic), niacinamide, glycyrrhiza root extract and azeloyl glycine. The product can also have a rejuvenating effect on the application area, as it may improve skin quality and elasticity.
Dermamelan Intimate is a leading treatment for medical depigmentation. It can only be performed by a properly trained provider in a doctor-led facility, such as our South Melbourne skin clinic.
How Does Dermamelan Intimate Work?
The primary factor behind skin colour is melanin, a natural pigment found in the skin. Dermamelan Intimate acts on pigmentation by reducing the activity of melanocytes, the cells responsible for melanin production. By controlling the production of melanin, the treatment works to diminish the appearance of darkened or discoloured skin.
What makes Dermamelan Intimate unique is its dual-action mechanism. The treatment provides a corrective effect on existing pigmentation by actively reducing melanin accumulation in the skin’s superficial layer. This intensive depigmentation occurs during the in-office portion of the treatment protocol.
Dermamelan Intimate also has a preventative effect against the formation of new pigmentation. This is owed to an accompanying home treatment regimen that regulates the synthesis of melanin and prevents it from reaching the skin surface.
Where Can Dermamelan Intimate Be Used?
Dermamelan Intimate is designed specifically for addressing pigmentation in delicate and sensitive areas. Application areas include:
- Axilla
- Genital-perineal area
- Perianal area
- Mons pubis
- Inner thigh
- Groin
Frequently asked questions
While both Dermamelan Intimate and Dermamelan reduce pigmentation, they are designed for different areas of the body and have distinct formulations and application methods.
Dermamelan Intimate is formulated for sensitive areas such as the groin and genital region. The ingredients are carefully chosen to lighten pigmentation in these delicate zones without causing irritation. There is one in-office treatment, followed by an at-home protocol that lasts for several months.
Dermamelan has a more robust formula and is primarily used for facial pigmentation, including melasma, chloasma and other types of hyperpigmentation that often occur on more exposed skin surfaces. At Kaya Cosmedica, our treatment protocol includes a lactic acid peel before the Dermamelan peel, then two follow-up treatments (an Age Element facial and an LED therapy session with Omnilux). The home care regimen lasts three to six months.
Dermamelan Intimate is an intensive treatment, so correct preparation is important. Our team will provide you with specific instructions to follow at home before the treatment. This may include:
- Avoiding sun exposure or tanning beds for a specified period
- Discontinuing the use of any other hyperpigmentation treatments
- Removing hair in the treatment area 48 hours before your appointment
The Dermamelan Intimate protocol involves several steps and a combination of in-clinic treatment and at-home care.
Step One: Consultation
Your treatment begins with an in-depth consultation with one of our providers, who will assess your suitability for the treatment and develop a personalised plan for you. Follow your provider’s instructions to prepare your skin for the application of the treatment.
Step Two: Skin Prep
Your provider will cleanse the treatment area and apply a protective balm that prevents the Dermamelan Intimate solution from migrating. This helps reduce discomfort or skin irritation in the most delicate areas.
Step Three: Peel Application
Once your skin is properly prepared, your provider will apply the Dermamelan Intimate peeling solution and leave it on for seven minutes. After seven minutes, your provider will apply a neutralising spray and ensure there is no residue left behind.
Step Four: Mask Application
Next, your provider will apply the Dermamelan Intimate mask to the treatment area, followed by an occlusive film to facilitate the action of the active ingredients and keep the mask in place. More protective ointment will be added if required.
Step Five: Mask Removal
You can go home after the occlusive film is applied. The mask must be left in place for two hours. You will remove it at home when the time arrives with lukewarm water and a special cleansing gel.
Step Six: Post-Treatment Mask
Application
After thoroughly cleansing the area, you will apply the post-procedure crystal fibre mask. This mask helps reduce any irritation or discomfort in the treated area and should remain in place for 10 to 15 minutes before you wash it off.
Ongoing: At-Home Care
Beginning 48 hours after the in-clinic treatment, you will start applying the Dermamelan Intimate gel at night following the guidelines from your provider. This regimen will last several months to promote continued depigmenting action and regulate melanin production.
Aftercare is a vital aspect of the Dermamelan Intimate treatment. We will provide a specialised aftercare cream to be applied daily per the specific instructions. This cream is designed to complement the in-clinic treatment by further reducing pigmentation. It also helps with protecting and moisturising the treatment area, as well as increasing the skin’s elasticity and tone.
In the initial days following your appointment, the treated area may appear slightly reddened or darker. This is a typical response, signifying that the treatment is beginning to target the pigmentation.
Flaking usually appears several days after the treatment and can continue for up to one week. You will continue with the Dermamelan Intimate homecare regimen even after this subsides. Initially, while using the maintenance products, your skin may feel sensitive and tight and may continue flaking. These effects usually subside after about two weeks.
Open communication with our clinic is encouraged should you have any concerns or queries about what you are experiencing.
Kaya Cosmedica prioritises patient safety, and it's essential to us that you are well-informed about all aspects of the treatment, including any potential risks and side effects. With Dermamelan Intimate, those include:
- Temporary skin sensitivity
- Redness or swelling
- Dryness or flaking
- Mild discomfort or a tingling sensation
Dermamelan Intimate should only be administered by trained and experienced medical professionals. Treatment at Kaya Cosmedica ensures that you are in the hands of a practitioner who is familiar with the proper techniques and safety protocols.
Dermamelan Intimate is a powerful treatment for lightening pigmentation in intimate areas. Like any treatment, its results may vary from person to person. Here's a general timeline to guide your expectations:
- Initial Changes: In the first week following the in-clinic treatment, you may notice a subtle improvement in the texture of the skin and a gentle lightening of the pigmentation.
- Noticeable Improvements: Approximately two to four weeks after beginning the treatment, more pronounced lightening and evening of the skin tone typically become apparent.
- Final Results: For the most noticeable results, consistent use of the homecare products is essential. Full results are usually achieved within eight to twelve weeks of the treatment.
Follow-up appointments will help us track your progress and make adjustments to your treatment plan if needed.
Dermamelan Intimate typically provides long-lasting lightening of pigmentation. With proper care and adherence to the aftercare instructions, the results can be sustained for many months or even longer.
Factors such as sun exposure, hormonal changes and skincare routines can influence the duration of the results. To sustain your results, we may recommend periodic follow-up treatments or specific maintenance products. The bespoke nature of our approach ensures that maintenance plans are tailored to suit your individual skin type and needs.
