Dermal Fillers
Dermal Filler treatments are injectable cosmetic treatments that consist of biocompatible substances such as hyaluronic acid. Over time, volume and support is lost in areas of the face as a part of the natural process of ageing. This can lead to wrinkles, drooping, loss of volume, and change in proportion to different areas of the face. The purpose of dermal fillers is to restore lost volume, smooth out and soften wrinkles and folds, provide tissue support and facial contouring. Common areas treated with dermal fillers include cheeks, jawline and lips.
We invite patients seeking an experienced cosmetic practice in South Melbourne to schedule an in-person consultation with Dr Parvin Khinda (aka Dr PK) and her experienced nurse injectors to discuss dermal fillers at Kaya Cosmedica. Dr PK and her staff are committed to remaining at the forefront of aesthetic innovations, safety standards, and products.

What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are gel like substances injected into various underlying tissue layers and structures, where they add support to the skin to restore youthful volume and hydration while smoothing away wrinkles and other skin imperfections. Dermal fillers used at Kaya Cosmedica are safe, biocompatible, non-permanent, and reversible.
All fillers used at Kaya Cosmedica are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance that naturally occurs in the skin and connective tissues. One of its most important functions is to keep the skin supple and hydrated. When hyaluronic acid injects into the body as a dermal filler, it attracts water to hydrate and volumise the skin from within.
What Can Dermal Fillers Do?
When administered by experienced injectors, these treatments offer the following benefits:
- Provide underlying support for the dermal structure
- Enhance lip size and shape
- Sculpt and define the cheekbones
- Enhance the chin by lengthening and projection
- Contour the jawline or for jaw-tightening purposes
- Correct imperfections or asymmetries
- Correct fine lines and deeper wrinkles
- Improve the appearance of shallow scars, including acne and surgical scars
- Volumise the temples for a more youthful facial shape
- Add subtle volume to the tear troughs to improve the appearance of tired eyes, dark circles, fine lines, and volume loss
- Restore volume in the backs of ageing hands
Results appear right after treatment and can last for years until subsequent treatments are necessary to maintain a fresh and rejuvenated appearance.

Frequently asked questions
Dermal fillers support underlying structures, where their primary job is to restore volume, shape, and lift the face, in addition to enhancing facial contours. Volume loss is a natural part of the ageing process and can lead to wrinkles, drooping, shrivelling, and flattening of different areas of the face. Dermal fillers can soften wrinkles (e.g. around the mouth), lift areas that droop (e.g. jowls, cheeks), and volumise (e.g. lips, cheeks) by providing support and restoring volume, as well as smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines in the skin.
Hyaluronic acid binds with water and plumps up the area treated, providing support, volume, and hydration. There is some stimulation of collagen production as well. The effects of dermal fillers can last, on average, 10-18 months. This depends on the type of filler used, the area treated, and the individual’s metabolism.
At Kaya Cosmedica, fillers selected integrate beautifully, providing a natural and soft appearance.
Pre treatment photography
Pre-procedure clinical photography is taken of the treatment area from various angles to document your baseline appearance and serve as a reference point to compare with when assessing your results and outcomes.
Cleansing & Anaesthesia
Sterile technique is of utmost importance when performing medical procedures to minimise the risk of infection. The treatment area is cleaned to remove makeup, and antiseptic is applied. If required a topical numbing cream or injectable anaesthetic is used to ensure your comfort during the procedure.
Injection
Using a fine needle or dermal cannula, the chosen dermal filler will be injected into the specific area and depth, using the minimal amount of volume required to achieve the desired outcome. Different techniques are utilised, and varying number of injections and amount of filler is used depending on the treatment area and goals.
Post Treatment Care
Post treatment care instructions will be provided and these include avoiding strenuous exercise for a few days after treatment, refraining from alcohol and blood thinning medication to reduce the risk of bruising, and using cold compresses to minimise and bruising.
Recovery
Typically, dermal filler procedures have minimal downtime. There may be redness at the dermal cannula entry point, minor swelling or bruising, these subside within a few days.
Review Appointment & Follow up
A review appointment is scheduled between 2-4 weeks after treatment. At this appointment, post treatment photography is taken and outcomes are assessed to ensure desired results are achieved.
At the South Melbourne-based Kaya Cosmedica, Dr PK and her nurse injectors have undergone significant training, and all have extensive experience in the art and science of aesthetics. Dr PK is committed to keeping abreast of the latest medical and scientific advances in cosmetic procedures, including best practices and techniques for administering dermal fillers.
In rare cases, more serious complications can occur, including infection, allergic reactions, lumps, or vascular issues. To minimise these risks, it’s essential to choose a skilled and qualified provider, follow pre- and post-treatment instructions diligently, and discuss any concerns or medical conditions with your practitioner during the consultation. While the risks are relatively low, transparency and informed decision-making are essential when considering dermal filler treatments.
Dermal filler treatments are generally safe, but there are potential risks like any medical procedures. Common side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, redness and minimal discomfort at the treatment areas. These typically subside within a few days.
In rare cases, more serious complications can occur, including allergic reactions, infection, persisting lumps, swelling, Tyndall effect and vascular issues such as necrosis and blindness. To minimise these risks it is important to choose an experienced and skilled injector and to ensure your treatment takes place in a clinic setting that is well equipped to manage complications.
Dr PK and her team takes the utmost care during all procedures, and an initial consultation is mandatory before all treatments so that an overall health and psychological assessment can take place to identify any potential risk factors or contraindications. This initial assessment provides essential information to ensure your utmost safety and allows any concerns to be addressed before the treatment takes place. Dr PK and her team also undergo regular emergency protocol training and have a well equipped clinic to manage emergencies.
1.Schedule a consultation
At Kaya Cosmedica, each new patient requires a cosmetic consultation prior to any treatment to ensure a successful and safe outcome. Our consultations are designed to provide you with a tailored experience that addresses your specific needs, concerns and expectations. This is achieved through a facial assessment prior to every treatment and clinical images that are taken prior to treatment to monitor your progress. It is also important to take a full medical history to ensure the treatments we recommend are safe and effective for your individual circumstances. The consultation also allows you to get to know the processes and treatment options at Kaya Cosmedia, ask questions and gain insight into our expertise and approach. This allows us to work together towards achieving your desired aesthetic goals
2. Review your medical history and education
It is also important to take a full medical history to ensure the treatments we recommend are safe and effective for your individual circumstances. The consultation also allows you to get to know the processes and treatment options at Kaya Cosmedia, ask questions and gain insight into our expertise and approach. This allows us to work together towards achieving your desired aesthetic goals.
3. Review medications
During your consultation please advise if you are taking any blood thinning medications and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and vitamin E tablets. These can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding. It is advised to stop these 5 days prior to the procedure.
4. Review lifestyle measures
It is advised to cease alcohol and smoking 5 days prior to reduce the risk of swelling and bruising and optimise recovery. Staying well hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can promote recovery and better results.
5. Timing of appointment & downtime
Whilst dermal filler treatments have minimal downtime, it is a good idea to schedule your appointments at least 4 weeks prior to an important occasion (e.g. wedding) and to avoid strenuous activities for 1-3 days post treatment.
The pricing of dermal fillers vary depending on the type of filler, the treatment area and amount of volume loss, the amount of filler used to achieve the desired results as well as the skill and experience of the medical professional performing the procedure. A detailed, accurate and customised quote is provided during your consultation.
When can I expect results after dermal fillers?
There is minimal, if any, downtime after treatments at Kaya Cosmedica in South Melbourne. You can schedule the procedure for your lunch hour and return to your daily activities as soon as you are done.
You will see preliminary results immediately. However, it does take up to four weeks for the filler to hydrate and integrate into the tissues to achieve the final result. A complimentary review appointment at two-four weeks enables your cosmetic injector to assess the result and make any adjustments as necessary.
How long do fillers last?
Dermal fillers are not permanent, as your body metabolises the product and breaks it down over time. Your new look may last from 10 to 18 months after your treatment. The durability of the treatment will depend on many factors, including the area treated and the type of filler used.
Regular follow-up treatments (e.g. every 10-12 months) will produce long-lasting results. Your Kaya Cosmedica provider will inform you of the anticipated lifespan of your dermal filler injections and determine an optimal maintenance schedule
Do dermal fillers give natural results?
Under Dr PK's lead, Kaya Cosmedica's focus is to enhance your natural beauty; all treatments are always tailored to your unique profile to ensure a natural result.
All new patients must attend an initial consultation. Here your skin will be assessed, and all suitable options will be discussed. Our aim is to always enhance your natural beauty; some treatment options are better than others to do this
What happens when dermal fillers wear off?
You can expect your pre-treatment wrinkles or facial shape to gradually reappear as the filler metabolises. As you have grown accustomed to smoother skin and a more youthful appearance, it may feel as though your wrinkles have worsened when in fact, they have returned to baseline.
Some fillers have demonstrated the ability to stimulate collagen growth in the injected area. This collagen remains even after the fillers dissolve, providing long-term benefits for skin health and appearance.
In most cases, the only evidence of your procedure you will see is a smoother, more youthful appearance. There may be mild swelling around the injection areas, which will subside for most patients within four to five days. A few patients might find it takes up to two weeks for the swelling to go down completely. You might also be able to see the tiny injection points for a few hours after your procedure. You can easily hide them with makeup if they are still visible the next day.
If a nerve block is used (not local anaesthetic), it can take 2 hours to resolve, so patients will need to be careful when eating hot/sharp textured food, as there is limited sensation.
Some bruising or swelling may occur after the filler is injected, so it is recommended that patients with upcoming events and special occasions schedule a filler appointment four weeks beforehand, giving enough time for any swelling to go down and the filler to settle in and provide optimal results.
All dermal fillers used at Kaya Cosmedica can be removed if they have produced side effects or an undesired result. A naturally occurring enzyme called hyaluronidase is injected into the skin to dissolve the filler, reversing its effect without causing harm to the skin. This procedure must be performed by a highly trained aesthetic provider with a sound knowledge of facial anatomy to achieve the safest and most attractive result. At Kaya Cosmedica, we also offer anti-wrinkle injections. While these treatments are together under the broad ‘injectables’ category, there are differences.
Anti-wrinkle injections target dynamic wrinkles that develop from repeatedly making certain facial expressions. When you repeatedly move your face the same way — as we all do over a lifetime of smiling, frowning, squinting, and laughing — you gradually develop wrinkles where your skin creases. At first, those lines fade when your muscles relax and you stop making the expression. But over time, the lines become permanently ingrained and visible even when your face is at rest.
Anti-wrinkle injections work by temporarily stopping muscle contractions. This helps soften dynamic wrinkles and may also help prevent new lines from forming. We typically use anti-wrinkle injections in the upper face to treat forehead lines, ‘eleven’ lines between the eyebrows and crow’s feet. We also use anti-wrinkle injections as a medical treatment to help with bruxism, hyperhidrosis, and migraines
Dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections can be used simultaneously to produce a dramatically more youthful appearance.
Collagen stimulators, also called biostimulators, are the next generation of cosmetic fillers. These products offer two benefits. Like fillers, the injectable gel immediately 'fills' the area to provide instant volume and smoothness. The body eventually metabolises the gel.
Collagen stimulators are unique in their ability to jumpstart the skin's natural collagen and elastin production. This part of the treatment develops over time, gradually achieving subtle, natural rejuvenation. Another benefit of collagen stimulators is that they are completely replaced by your own collagen over time and do not migrate.
Collagen stimulators can be performed with dermal fillers for a comprehensive facial refresh.
