Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers support underlying structures, where their primary job is to restore volume, shape, and lift the face, in addition to enhancing facial contours. Volume loss is a natural part of the ageing process and can lead to wrinkles, drooping, shrivelling, and flattening of different areas of the face. Dermal fillers can soften wrinkles (e.g. around the mouth), lift areas that droop (e.g. jowls, cheeks), and volumise (e.g. lips, cheeks) by providing support and restoring volume, as well as smoothing out wrinkles and fine lines in the skin.

Hyaluronic acid binds with water and plumps up the area treated, providing support, volume, and hydration. There is some stimulation of collagen production as well.  The effects of dermal fillers can last, on average, 10-18 months. This depends on the type of filler used, the area treated, and the individual’s metabolism.

Pre-procedure clinical photography is taken of the treatment area from various angles to document your baseline appearance and serve as a reference point to compare with when assessing your results and outcomes.

Cleansing & Anaesthesia

Sterile technique is of utmost importance when performing medical procedures to minimise the risk of infection.  The treatment area is cleaned to remove makeup, and antiseptic is applied.  If required a topical numbing cream or injectable anaesthetic is used to ensure your comfort during the procedure.

Injection

Using a fine needle or dermal cannula, the chosen dermal filler will be injected into the specific area and depth, using the minimal amount of volume required to achieve the desired outcome.  Different techniques are utilised, and varying number of injections and amount of filler is used  depending on the treatment area and goals.

Post Treatment Care

Post treatment care instructions will be provided and these include avoiding strenuous exercise for a few days after treatment, refraining from alcohol and blood thinning medication to reduce the risk of bruising, and using cold compresses to minimise and bruising.

Recovery

Typically, dermal filler procedures have minimal downtime.  There may be redness at the dermal cannula entry point, minor swelling or bruising, these subside within a few days.

Review Appointment & Follow up

A review appointment is scheduled between 2-4 weeks after treatment.  At this appointment, post treatment photography is taken and outcomes are assessed to ensure desired results are achieved.

Dermal filler treatments are generally safe, but there are potential risks like any medical procedures.  Common side effects include temporary swelling, bruising, redness and minimal discomfort at the treatment areas.  These typically subside within a few days.

2. Review your medical history and education

It is also important to take a full medical history to ensure the treatments we recommend are safe and effective for your individual circumstances. 3. Review medications

During your consultation please advise if you are taking any blood thinning medications and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and vitamin E tablets.  These can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.  It is advised to stop these 5 days prior to the procedure.

4. Review lifestyle measures

It is advised to cease alcohol and smoking 5 days prior to reduce the risk of swelling and bruising and optimise recovery.  Staying well hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet can promote recovery and better results.

5. Timing of appointment & downtime

Whilst dermal filler treatments have minimal downtime, it is a good idea to schedule your appointments at least 4 weeks prior to an important occasion (e.g. wedding) and to avoid strenuous activities for 1-3 days post treatment.

When can I expect results after dermal fillers?

There is minimal, if any, downtime after treatments at Kaya Cosmedica in South Melbourne. You can schedule the procedure for your lunch hour and return to your daily activities as soon as you are done.

You will see preliminary results immediately. However, it does take up to four weeks for the filler to hydrate and integrate into the tissues to achieve the final result. A complimentary review appointment at two-four weeks enables your cosmetic injector to assess the result and make any adjustments as necessary.

How long do fillers last?

Dermal fillers are not permanent, as your body metabolises the product and breaks it down over time. Your new look may last from 10 to 18 months after your treatment. The durability of the treatment will depend on many factors, including the area treated and the type of filler used.

Regular follow-up treatments (e.g. every 10-12 months) will produce long-lasting results. Your Kaya Cosmedica provider will inform you of the anticipated lifespan of your dermal filler injections and determine an optimal maintenance schedule

What happens when dermal fillers wear off? 

You can expect your pre-treatment wrinkles or facial shape to gradually reappear as the filler metabolises. As you have grown accustomed to smoother skin and a more youthful appearance, it may feel as though your wrinkles have worsened when in fact, they have returned to baseline. 

Some fillers have demonstrated the ability to stimulate collagen growth in the injected area. This collagen remains even after the fillers dissolve, providing long-term benefits for skin health and appearance.

In most cases, the only evidence of your procedure you will see is a smoother, more youthful appearance. There may be mild swelling around the injection areas, which will subside for most patients within four to five days. A few patients might find it takes up to two weeks for the swelling to go down completely. You might also be able to see the tiny injection points for a few hours after your procedure. You can easily hide them with makeup if they are still visible the next day.

If a nerve block is used (not local anaesthetic), it can take 2 hours to resolve, so patients will need to be careful when eating hot/sharp textured food, as there is limited sensation. 

Some bruising or swelling may occur after the filler is injected, so it is recommended that patients with upcoming events and special occasions schedule a filler appointment four weeks beforehand, giving enough time for any swelling to go down and the filler to settle in and provide optimal results.

All dermal fillers used at Kaya Cosmedica can be removed if they have produced side effects or an undesired result. A naturally occurring enzyme called hyaluronidase is injected into the skin to dissolve the filler, reversing its effect without causing harm to the skin. At Kaya Cosmedica, we also offer anti-wrinkle injections. While these treatments are together under the broad ‘injectables’ category, there are differences.

Anti-wrinkle injections target dynamic wrinkles that develop from repeatedly making certain facial expressions. When you repeatedly move your face the same way — as we all do over a lifetime of smiling, frowning, squinting, and laughing — you gradually develop wrinkles where your skin creases. At first, those lines fade when your muscles relax and you stop making the expression. But over time, the lines become permanently ingrained and visible even when your face is at rest.

Anti-wrinkle injections work by temporarily stopping muscle contractions. This helps soften dynamic wrinkles and may also help prevent new lines from forming. We typically use anti-wrinkle injections in the upper face to treat forehead lines, ‘eleven’ lines between the eyebrows and crow’s feet. Collagen stimulators, also called biostimulators, are the next generation of cosmetic fillers. These products offer two benefits. Like fillers, the injectable gel immediately 'fills' the area to provide instant volume and smoothness. The body eventually metabolises the gel.

Collagen stimulators are unique in their ability to jumpstart the skin's natural collagen and elastin production. This part of the treatment develops over time, gradually achieving subtle, natural rejuvenation.
