PREGNANCY SAFE?
Hyperpigmentation occurs when an excess of melanin leads to darkened spots or patches on your skin. This is a global concern, but it is especially prominent here in Australia, where we experience high levels of ultraviolet radiation.
While sun exposure is the most well-known cause of pigmentation, it is only one of many factors that can contribute. Hyperpigmentation can also be triggered by hormonal changes, inflammatory conditions and some photosensitising drugs, as well as genetic influences.
Dermamelan offers a solution for those seeking clearer, more even-toned skin. By targeting the underlying causes of hyperpigmentation and working at the cellular level, Dermamelan not only lightens dark patches but also helps prevent their recurrence. What Is Dermamelan?
The treatment protocol consists of an initial in-clinic consult followed by treatments in-clinic and an at-home skincare routine to promote deeper, longer-lasting results.
With this unique approach, Dermamelan offers a double corrective and regulatory action that can:
- Correct existing pigmentation
- Regulate melanin overproduction to limit the recurrence of spots
Dermamelan is the world’s leading medical depigmentation treatment. It can only be performed by a properly trained provider in a doctor-led clinic, such as Kaya Cosmedica in South Melbourne.
How Is Dermamelan Different From Cosmelan?
Both Dermamelan and Cosmelan are effective depigmentation treatments, but there are key differences between them.
Cosmelan is a milder aesthetic treatment and is suitable for less severe pigmentation. Dermamelan is a next-generation medical-grade depigmentation method. It is significantly stronger than Cosmelan, and therefore must only be used under a doctor’s supervision and monitoring.
Dermamelan’s groundbreaking formula allows for a more comprehensive and effective action when treating deeper and more stubborn pigmentation. This patented innovation can produce results after 6 months of treatment, making Dermamelan a more efficient and convenient protocol than Cosmelan.
How Does Dermamelan Work?
Dermamelan acts on the stratum corneum, stimulating epidermal renewal and intensively combating the build-up of melanin. The dermamelan acts by preventing pigmentation from reaching the superficial layers of the skin and also reducing the amount of melanin formed, reducing the intensity of the pigmented spot.
The Dermamelan protocol works through a dual-action mechanism that combines correction with a long-term regulating effect.

Corrective Benefits
Dermamelan actively reduces the accumulation of pigment in the skin’s superficial layer and encourages cell renewal. The combination of these actions helps to fade existing pigmentation and produce a brighter, more even complexion.
Preventative Benefits
Dermamelan also helps prevent the formation of new pigmentation by regulating the synthesis of melanin and preventing it from reaching the skin’s upper layers. This is achieved through the ingredients found in the protocol’s three home-use products.

An initial consultation with our practitioners at Kaya Cosmedica is essential to assess the skin using our VISIA skin imaging system to ensure suitability for the treatment and discuss the process.
As the Dermamelan treatment consists of multiple stages it is important you are following pre and post care instructions from your practitioner.
Before your Dermamelan treatment, you are advised to follow a few preparation steps.
Avoid sun exposure and refrain from using products containing glycolic acid or retinol for at least one week prior to treatment. Your provider will review your current skincare routine during your initial consultation and advise you of any necessary adjustments.
Let your provider know if you have undergone any previous hyperpigmentation treatments. If so, you may be asked to discontinue their use at least one week prior to commencing the Dermamelan depigmentation protocol or delay the start of your Dermamelan treatment.
Please avoid skin-irritating shaving methods, such as razor blades, in the treatment area for at least two days before the treatment. An electric shaver is the preferred alternative.
The Dermamelan protocol involves several phases and a combination of in-clinic treatments and at-home care.
Step One: Consultation and Skin Prep
The Dermamelan consists of several stages and a combination of in-clinic treatments and home care.
Consultation stage: Your journey begins with a consultation with your practitioner to assess your skin and provide you with detailed instructions
Preparation stage – 2 weeks prior: Mesopeel lactic 30%
Step Two: The Dermamelan Method
Consists of 4 Phases
Phase I – Intensive depigmentation in clinic: Dermamelan mask
- Five days after the Dermamelan peel, you will return once more to the clinic for an assessment of your progress. You will also undergo two follow-up treatments, a customised Age Element facial from Mesoestetic and an LED therapy session with Omnilux, to enhance your results.
Phase II – Continuous depigmentation at home: Home care kit for 1 month
Phase III – Pigmentation regulation at home: Home care kit for the 2nd and 3rd month.
Phase IV – Reappearance control: Home care kit for the 4th to 7th Month
It is essential to adhere to a comprehensive aftercare routine to promote healing and results. This phase is a critical part of the Dermamelan treatment protocol.
You will receive detailed post-care guidelines, so you can refer to them at home. These may include:
- Using the Dermamelan home treatment cream
- Applying other products per your provider’s recommendations
- Avoiding sun exposure and using a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily
- Continuing the homecare routine for up to six months post-treatment
Remember, our team at Kaya Cosmedica are always here to support and guide you through your skincare journey. If you have any questions or concerns about your aftercare routine, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
At Kaya Cosmedica, we prioritise your safety and comfort. When used correctly and under the supervision of an appropriate professional, the risks and side effects of Dermamelan are minimal.
During the initial treatment phase, it is normal to experience some skin irritation or redness. During the at-home care phase, you may notice some peeling and sensitivity; however, these symptoms should subside as you continue using the recommended home products
You will start to see significant change within a few weeks from applying the mask in consultation. There will be an improvement in the skin texture and a reduction of pigmentation. At home treatment is continued for the full 6 months to regulate overproduction of melanin.
Please note that individual results may vary depending on your initial skin quality. It is essential to follow the aftercare regimen for at least four months to help regulate melanin overproduction.
In some cases, more than one treatment may be necessary to achieve the desired outcome.
With adherence to the full Dermamelan protocol and good skincare habits, many patients report a lasting reduction in hyperpigmentation, a more even skin tone and an overall brighter complexion.
However, it is possible for pigmentation to reappear in the treated areas. To maintain your skin’s improved appearance, we strongly advise you to maintain a consistent skincare routine with high-quality products, stay hydrated and protect your skin from sun exposure. These measures will contribute to the longevity of your Dermamelan results.
If hyperpigmentation such as age spots, sun spots, post-inflammatory marks or melasma is a concern, you may be a candidate for Dermamelan. Unlike lasers, we are not restricted to particular skin types when treating with Dermamelan, making the treatment an option for nearly everyone.
While Dermamelan is suitable for most skin types and does not rely on skin-bleaching agents, it is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or those with an active skin infection or allergy to any of the ingredients.
One of our qualified providers will carefully assess your medical history and determine your suitability for Dermamelan during your consultation. If it is not the right option for you, we may be able to recommend an alternative, such as BBL, Tixel, microneedling (Dermapen), Omnilux LED therapy, Dermafrac or chemical peels.
