What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a component of blood that contains a concentrated amount of platelets which play a crucial role in the body’s natural healing processes. A small sample of the patient’s own blood is drawn and processed through a centrifuge that separates the components of blood, resulting in a platelet rich layer which is extracted. PRP contains a significantly higher concentration of platelets compared to whole blood, rich in growth factors and other bioactive proteins, that play a vital role in cell growth, tissue repair and wound healing. When PRP is applied to the target area such as skin, scalp or joints it can stimulate cell proliferation, collagen production and optimise the healing process.
PRP has been used in the medical field to promote healing of injured tendons, ligaments and joints and it is now being incorporated into aesthetic medicine to promote skin rejuvenation and stimulate hair growth.
How Can PRP Benefit the Skin?
PRP treatments may offer a multitude of benefits. When applied to your skin, PRP promotes cell turnover and helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, resulting in a more rejuvenated complexion.
PRP treatments aim to:
- Increase skin firmness and tightness
- Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
- Improve skin texture and tone
- Remodel scars
- Minimise sun damage and melasma
- Enhance skin radiance
- Accelerate the skin’s natural healing process
How Can PRP Benefit Thinning Hair?
The benefits of PRP do not stop at skin rejuvenation. PRP is also used in hair restoration treatments to stimulate hair follicles and promote hair growth. As we age or experience certain conditions, our hair follicles can become dormant or miniaturised, leading to thinning or sparse areas on our scalp. When applied to the scalp, PRP promotes the growth of new hair by reactivating dormant hair follicles increasing hair density and coverage.
In addition to stimulating hair growth, PRP can also improve the quality and texture of the hair. PRP increases blood circulation and delivery of vital nutrients to the scalp. This helps strengthen existing individual hair strands, making them more resistant to breakage and damage. This can result in fuller, healthier-looking hair that is less prone to thinning or shedding. It is important to note that PRP is not suitable for all causes of hair loss- we only treat androgenetic hair loss.
Frequently asked questions
Our South Melbourne PRP treatments are available to most adults seeking to improve the appearance of their skin or hair. They are generally suitable for most skin types and tones, however, it is essential to consult with our experienced practitioners to determine the best course of action for your specific needs.
Absolutely! At Kaya Cosmedica, we believe that everyone deserves to enjoy the benefits of advanced aesthetic treatments. Consultation
Your treatment journey at Kaya Cosmedica begins with a consultation with one of our skilled practitioners. During this initial appointment, we get to know your skin concerns, goals and medical history. This information helps us tailor the treatment to your unique needs.
Once we determine which PRP treatment is suitable for you, we will explain the procedure in detail and address any questions or concerns you may have. We emphasise open communication so you can make informed decisions.
Treatment
The treatment typically starts with a thorough cleansing of your skin to remove any impurities and prepare it for optimal absorption of the PRP. Next, the PRP will be prepared and applied to your skin. This can be done through various techniques, including topical application or microneedling, depending on the treatment plan devised for you.
During the procedure, you may experience sensations such as heating or pressure. We prioritise your well-being and employ techniques to maintain your comfort.
We offer several PRP treatments at Kaya Cosmedica, some of which utilise PRP as an add-on to another procedure. To determine which of the options below is appropriate for your needs, speak with one of our providers by booking in for a consultation here.
Microneedling + Prp
Combining PRP with microneedling is a powerful approach to skin rejuvenation. Microneedling involves creating tiny microchannels in the skin using fine needles, stimulating the body’s natural healing response. When PRP is added to the procedure, it penetrates deeper into the skin through these microchannels, enhancing the treatment’s effectiveness.
Tixel + Prp
Tixel utilises thermal energy to create microchannels in the skin. This enhances the delivery of PRP, promoting its deep absorption into the skin layers, where it can have the most significant effect. With its precise control and customisable settings, Tixel makes a synergistic complement to the targeted delivery of PRP.
Prp For Hair Restoration
PRP is a natural way to restore thinning or damaged hair. Through advanced injection techniques, PRP is carefully administered to the scalp, where it stimulates the hair follicles and promotes increased blood circulation. This revitalises dormant follicles, encourages the growth of new, healthier hair strands, and strengthens existing ones.
Downtime expectations and aftercare guidelines depend on the treatment modality used.
For microneedling and Tixel treatments, temporary side effects may include inflammation, redness, and sensations of warmth or tightness, which can last for a few hours to a few days. For hair restoration treatments, you may temporarily experience swelling, soreness, itching or pinpoint bleeding in the treated area.
We recommend avoiding direct sun exposure and intense physical activity immediately after PRP treatments. Patients commonly resume their normal routines within a day or two following treatment. Our team will provide you with detailed guidance on post-treatment care to promote proper healing.
Results from PRP treatments are not instant. Your body needs time to react to the treatment and engage its natural regenerative processes, which happens gradually. Visible changes can take several weeks, and improvements can continue for several months.
We recommend a personalised treatment plan tailored to your needs. The frequency of PRP treatments to maintain results can vary depending on factors such as your skin condition, desired outcome and individual response to the treatment.
In general, a series of initial treatments is often recommended to achieve your goals, followed by periodic maintenance sessions. During your consultation, your provider will design a customised treatment schedule that supports long-lasting results.
